How a website backup saved the day

by | Oct 4, 2021

I’m going to tell them a story about how a website backup saved a client’s website when most of the content was deleted by a new manager. Yes… this can happen if you are not sure what you are doing.

My client (we will call her Jane) called me in a complete panic because she “pressed a button and everything disappeared”.

The level of stress in Jane’s voice was overwhelming to my non-conflict natured self.  But it was also completely reasonable because she thought her entire website was gone. Hours of blog posts, online course content, edited photos, aligned layout, mobile customizations, and more. Even worse than imagined, Jane had a big annual sale coming up that weekend (in 5 days). A huge part of her sales come from this sale, and there would be no time to create the website from scratch. She was scared that she would lose out on one of her biggest sale days of the year (and seriously jeopardize her income).

However, in my calm voice, I reassured Jane that all was not lost and that everything would be okay because her maintenance plan included daily backups. Yes… daily backups. She would lose what she was doing that day, but we could go to the my server, restore a backup from the day before, and voila, ALL IS NOT LOST!! Having a website backup (and someone to help restore the backup– your friendly neighborhood web developer) saved the day. I was able to restore the previous version of her website in time for the annual sale.  She just had a few unsaved updates that she had to redo (1 hour of work vs. XX?? Unknowable time without a backup). Jane quickly took a deep breath and breathed out a sigh of relief and a few tears. This was going to be Jane’s worst day and I was able to help her, calm her down, and quickly solve her problem. That is what makes my job so worthwhile.

This was Jane’s happy ending, but this is not always the case for others without reliable backups. I cannot stress enough the importance of regular backups by someone you trust. It can literally save your bacon.
