What’s the story behind discovering the quote you love?
Rewind to 2018 when I was just starting my business. I was clearly not making money from it, running myself into the ground, and I didn’t realize that I was trying to do everything myself. I was working on designing my own website, when I came across this quote. It really struck me that I was asking my potential clients to do something that I was not willing to do myself.
Who said it and why?
Sir Richard Branson… is clearly a bit looney but also clearly very successful. I knew there had to be something to this because I was asking my clients to do it… so that meant I needed my own medicine.
What do you think it means?
There is this badge of honor that entrepreneurs have… of the jack of all trades, working 80 hour weeks, “grinding”, living on caffeine and 4 hours of sleep per night… I want to bust this myth and paint a different picture of entrepreneurs. I can’t live that way, and I truly believe that no one can live that way. Something always has to give, which usually is your relationships, physical health, and overall quality of life. It doesn’t have to be this way.
How do you apply it to your business?
This quote influences how I run my agency because I have life balance expectations for myself as well as my clients. I do not take on a project when I have too many other deadlines. I am honest with the timeframe and discuss changes to that if needed. I truly care about my clients and check in to see how they are doing, not just their business or bottom line, but them, their family, their health. Business doesn’t happen in a vacuum, life is always happening all around you. I’m more than a tech support, but truly feel like I am a trusted friend.
What important lessons from it can you share with your readers?
I will continue to apply this lesson to my business and my personal life because you truly can’t do everything on your own. I also want to impart this knowledge and skill to my children. Yes… it’s important to be independent, but it’s also important to know when it’s best to Breathe and Delegate.
